AP® Calculus Integral Rules: Complete Proofs & Worked Examples

📅 Verified for 2026–2027 Examination Blueprint (College Board CED)

Integration represents accumulation and the inverse process of differentiation. To score a 5 on AP® Calculus AB or BC, you must fluently apply U-Substitution, evaluate definite integrals with the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, and master Integration by Parts.

  5. Frequently Asked Questions

1. The Power Rule for Integration

$$\int x^n \, dx = \frac{x^{n+1}}{n+1} + C \quad (n \neq -1)$$

When $n = -1$, remember that the integral yields the natural logarithm: $\int \frac{1}{x} \, dx = \ln|x| + C$. Always cross-check with our comprehensive AP Calculus Formulas Sheet.

💡 Worked Example: Evaluate $\int (4x^3 - 6x + 5) \, dx$.
$$\int (4x^3 - 6x + 5) \, dx = 4\left(\frac{x^4}{4}\right) - 6\left(\frac{x^2}{2}\right) + 5x + C = x^4 - 3x^2 + 5x + C$$

2. U-Substitution (Reverse Chain Rule)

$$\int f(g(x)) g'(x) \, dx = \int f(u) \, du$$

U-Substitution reverses the Chain Rule of differentiation. Choose $u$ as the inside function whose derivative $du$ appears as a factor in the integrand.

💡 Worked Example: Evaluate $\int 2x \cos(x^2) \, dx$.
Let $u = x^2 \implies du = 2x \, dx$.
$$\int \cos(u) \, du = \sin(u) + C = \sin(x^2) + C$$
⚠️ Student Trap Alert: On definite integrals, never leave original x-limits with a u-integral. Convert limits: $u(a)$ to $u(b)$.

3. The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus (FTC)

Part 1 (Derivative of an Accumulation Function):

$$\frac{d}{dx}\left[\int_a^x f(t) \, dt\right] = f(x)$$

Part 2 (Evaluation Theorem):

$$\int_a^b f(x) \, dx = F(b) - F(a)$$

Where $F'(x) = f(x)$. Master all derivative definitions in our AP Calculus Derivative Rules guide.

4. Integration by Parts (BC Topic)

$$\int u \, dv = uv - \int v \, du$$

Use the LIPET mnemonic to select $u$: Logarithmic, Inverse trig, Polynomial, Exponential, Trigonometric.

Frequently Asked Questions

❓ What happens if I forget '+ C' on an AP Calculus Free Response Question?

Forgetting '+ C' on indefinite integrals or initial value differential equations costs a mandatory 1-point deduction on College Board scoring rubrics.

Why This Step? Blueprint Breakdown: AP® Calculus AB/BC

Key Conceptual Scaffolding & Diagnostic Intuition

Tested Competency: Derivative theorems, Riemann sums & Taylor series. In modern competitive exams, questions are engineered to test whether you understand the underlying structural relationship—not just whether you memorized a formula.

⚠️ Student Trap Alert (Common Scoring Pitfall):

Forgetting the chain rule on composite functions or mixing up Average Rate of Change with Instantaneous Rate of Change.

💡 High-Yield Scoring Rule:

Always write out your hypotheses and state conditions explicitly before calculating test statistics. Graders award up to 40% of partial credit for proper setup, regardless of arithmetic precision.
