1. Differential Equations & Solution Verification

A differential equation is an equation relating an unknown function to its derivatives. In AP Calculus AB and BC (CED Unit 7), differential equations model dynamic rates of change across biology, physics, and finance. A function $y = g(x)$ is a particular solution to a differential equation if substituting $g(x)$ and its derivatives produces a mathematical identity for all $x$ in the domain.

To verify if $y = C e^{2x} + 3$ satisfies $\frac{dy}{dx} = 2y - 6$, compute $\frac{dy}{dx} = 2C e^{2x}$ and evaluate the right-hand side: $2(Ce^{2x} + 3) - 6 = 2Ce^{2x}$. Both sides match identically, confirming the general solution. Expand your repertoire of integration techniques in our AP Calculus integral rules.

2. Slope Fields: Construction & Solution Curves

A slope field (direction field) is a graphical visualization of a first-order differential equation $\frac{dy}{dx} = f(x, y)$. At selected grid points $(x, y)$, a small tangent line segment is plotted with slope equal to $f(x, y)$:

⚠️ Student Trap Alert: When asked to sketch a particular solution passing through a given initial point $(x_0, y_0)$, your curve MUST pass through that exact point, follow the slope contours smoothly in both directions, and respect horizontal and vertical asymptotic boundaries. Do not cross vertical asymptotes!

3. Separation of Variables & The Mandatory '+C' Rule

Separation of variables is the single most tested technique on AP Calculus Free Response Questions (carrying up to 5 or 6 points on a 9-point FRQ). The differential equation must be written in the separable form:

$$\frac{dy}{dx} = g(x) h(y) \implies \frac{1}{h(y)}\,dy = g(x)\,dx$$
💡 Worked FRQ Problem: Solve $\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{2x}{y}$ with initial condition $y(0) = -3$.
1. Separate variables: $y\,dy = 2x\,dx$.
2. Integrate both sides: $\int y\,dy = \int 2x\,dx \implies \frac{1}{2}y^2 = x^2 + C$.
3. Solve for $C$ immediately using $(0, -3)$: $\frac{1}{2}(-3)^2 = 0^2 + C \implies C = \frac{9}{2}$.
4. Substitute $C$: $\frac{1}{2}y^2 = x^2 + \frac{9}{2} \implies y^2 = 2x^2 + 9$.
5. Choose sign of radical based on initial condition ($y = -3 < 0$): $y = -\sqrt{2x^2 + 9}$.
⚠️ College Board Scoring Warning: If you do not separate variables, you receive 0 out of 5 or 6 points for the entire question. Furthermore, if you omit $+C$ during the integration step, you cannot earn any subsequent points!

4. Exponential Growth, Decay & Newton's Law of Cooling

Whenever the rate of change of a quantity is directly proportional to the quantity itself, the governing differential equation is:

$$\frac{dy}{dt} = k y \iff y(t) = y_0 e^{kt}$$

Where $y_0$ is the initial quantity at $t = 0$, and $k$ is the relative growth rate constant ($k > 0$ for exponential growth, $k < 0$ for exponential decay). In Newton's Law of Cooling, the rate of change of temperature $T$ is proportional to the difference between $T$ and ambient temperature $T_s$:

$$\frac{dT}{dt} = -k(T - T_s) \iff T(t) = T_s + (T_0 - T_s)e^{-kt}$$

5. Euler's Method Step-by-Step (AP® Calculus BC)

Euler's Method is a numerical approximation algorithm used to approximate solution curves of differential equations when an analytical antiderivative cannot be obtained. Given an initial condition $(x_0, y_0)$ and step size $\Delta x$:

$$x_{n+1} = x_n + \Delta x \qquad y_{n+1} = y_n + \left.\frac{dy}{dx}\right|_{(x_n, y_n)} \cdot \Delta x$$
Step ($n$) $x_n$ $y_n$ $\frac{dy}{dx} = f(x_n, y_n)$ $\Delta y = \frac{dy}{dx} \cdot \Delta x$ $y_{n+1} = y_n + \Delta y$
0 $x_0$ $y_0$ $f(x_0, y_0)$ $f(x_0, y_0) \cdot \Delta x$ $y_0 + \Delta y_0$
1 $x_0 + \Delta x$ $y_1$ $f(x_1, y_1)$ $f(x_1, y_1) \cdot \Delta x$ $y_1 + \Delta y_1$

Remember that if the solution curve is concave up ($y'' > 0$), Euler's tangent line approximations will underestimate the true value. If concave down ($y'' < 0$), Euler's method will overestimate the true value. Check your complete BC review in our calculus review sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions (AP® Calculus AB & BC)

Q: When solving separation of variables, when should I solve for C?

Solve for C immediately after integrating both sides. Trying to algebraically isolate y first and solving for C later increases the risk of algebraic errors (especially when dealing with logarithms or square roots).

Q: How do I choose the correct sign when solving y^2 = f(x)?

Look at the initial condition y(x0) = y0. If y0 is positive, choose y = +sqrt(f(x)). If y0 is negative, you MUST choose y = -sqrt(f(x)). Forgetting the negative sign forfeits the final answer point on the AP exam.

Q: Is Euler's Method tested on AP Calculus AB?

No. Euler's Method is strictly an AP Calculus BC topic. However, slope fields and separation of variables are tested on BOTH Calculus AB and Calculus BC exams.
